Construction of Combined Motorway and Railway Route Adler – “Alpika-Service” Mountain Resort in Sochi

Adler – “Alpika Service” Mountain Resort (town of Krasnaya Polyana) combined motorway and railway route was built as part of preparations for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. The new 48.2-km long route is the most complex Olympic infrastructure project.

The tunneling excavation work was conducted by applying mining method (using tunneling machines and drilling and blasting operations) and shield method (using tunnel boring mechanized complexes (TMC).

2On 25 November 2013 the motorway part of the combined road from Adler to “Alpika Service” was opened. Regular train traffic operations on the railway route started on 1 November 2013.

Various businesses of the SK MOST Group of Companies have built the following installations in the section between the 14th and 46th kilometer marks of the route:

  • 6 railway tunnels
  • 3 motorway tunnels
  • 3 service/escape galleries
  • 22 railway bridges with a total length over 11 km
  • 23 highway bridges (including a cable-stayed bridge) with a total length of about 9 km
  • over 23 kilometers of earth-filled roadbed
